讲座内容:The current gold standard for making a definitive diagnosis for cancer is the histopathological examination. For a fast and safe in vivo diagnosis, however, new methods are urgently needed. We’re thinking about trying to augment the vision of the endoscopist. What we mean by that is providing contrast for really early signs of cancer which are currently very difficult for the endoscopist to see. Normally we’re looking with a white light camera that has red, green, and blue color channels just like we have red, green, and blue cones in our eye. When the disease is at a very early stage, it’s usually flat, so it’s pretty close to the lining, and also, it’s often just a slightly different shade of pink from the normal tissue. Therefore it makes it very difficult to spot with only three color channels. To extract quantitative biomarkers such as hemoglobin concentration and oxygenation from optical images, we combine novel spectral imaging methods with advanced computational analysis and biophysical modeling, applied in both preclinical cancer models and early phase clinical trials in patients. In this talk, I will focus on one aspect of these studies, applying multi- and hyper-spectral imaging during endoscopic surveillance of the gastrointestinal tract for detection of early esophageal cancer.
